From splitting expenses, to sharing chores and everything in between, there are many benefits to living in a multi-generational home. This living arrangement can help reduce stress, save money and strengthen a family’s bond.

Many homeowners tend to pass on this type of living situation, feeling they could lose their privacy or independence, but it is possible to re-design a home to ensure that everyone has their own space and a place to get some quiet time! Here are four renovation ideas to create the perfect multi-generational home:

Clean up

If you are adding additional family members to your current home, it’s time to declutter and donate items you no longer use. The more space you have, the better!

Finish your basement

This is a cost-effective way to increase the usable living space in your home. Not only will this give you more living space to use now, but it could double as a bedroom for potential housemates. Ensure to include a full bathroom, so there’s an extra shower in the house. Also, if you have the space, consider installing a kitchenette.

Integrate universal design

Universal design means making living areas accessible to all, including younger and older family members, as well as those with disabilities. Consider making doorways wider to allow easier access for wheelchairs or baby strollers. Install touchless faucets, and doorknobs and drawer handles that pass the “closed fist test.” If you can open the door or drawer with your fist closed, it is likely that someone with arthritis for example will be able to use it.

Remodel your kitchen

In addition to integrating universal design principles into your kitchen, there are other ways you can make your kitchen more adaptable to multi-generational living.  Adding a second sink and more counter space, such as an island, makes it easier for multiple cooks to work at the same time. A second dishwasher or refrigerator can also help meet the needs of more people under one roof.

Achieving a multi-generational home is a hefty task, but in the long run, you’ll save money and time with shared expenses and chores. It’s also a great opportunity to get creative with your space – and perhaps a fun family project that will feel like a huge accomplishment once everyone is settled into the newly renovated home!
